The latest installment in the Maddock Films Horror Comedy Universe, Thamma, has made a striking debut at the box office, setting a new record for its lead actor, Ayushmann Khurrana. Released during the festive Diwali week, the film has leveraged the holiday excitement and a positive audience response to secure a massive opening.

A Blockbuster Start

Thamma, which also stars Rashmika Mandanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, took in an impressive opening day collection, with trade reports suggesting a net domestic collection of approximately ₹24-25 crore. This figure not only marks the highest opening day of Ayushmann Khurrana’s career but also ranks the film as one of the biggest openers for the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, following only the massive success of Stree 2.

The strong start was further buoyed by a significant turnout from family audiences, a trend that is highly sought after during the festive season. The film’s overall Hindi occupancy on its first day was reported to be high, peaking during the afternoon and evening shows as the Diwali holiday was in full swing.

Maintaining Momentum Post-Holiday

Following the huge opening day, Thamma experienced the expected dip on its second day, which was the first working day immediately after the main Diwali holiday. However, the film showed strong resilience, collecting an estimated ₹18-19 crore net on Day 2.

This solid performance helped the film’s total domestic net collection cross the ₹42 crore mark after just two days, with its worldwide collection quickly soaring past the ₹50 crore milestone. The restricted second-day drop of around 25% is a strong indicator of positive word-of-mouth, which is crucial for the film’s long-term box office run.

Trade analysts have high expectations for Thamma, predicting that the film is well-positioned to cross the ₹100 crore mark in its extended opening weekend, given the ongoing festive period, including partial holidays like Bhai Dooj.

Record-Breaking for the Star and the Franchise

Thamma‘s initial success is being hailed as a major victory for its star, Ayushmann Khurrana, who registered his biggest opening ever, surpassing his previous hits. The actor himself noted that the film’s success “busts a lot of myths that people only want to see sequels and remakes and big superstar movies on Diwali,” emphasizing the audience’s demand for fresh, quality content.

The movie, directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, is the latest unique addition to the popular horror-comedy franchise and has been praised for its blend of Indian folklore, romance, and humour. With a strong opening and sustained collections, Thamma is proving to be a festive treat for cinema-goers and a significant box office success.
